Doctor/Rose Fix Winter Ficathon!

(Our apologies to the southern hemisphere.)

Much like our last ficathon, this is how it will work:
  1. Post a prompt! Comment to this post with your choice of Doctor/Rose pairing (any!Doctor/Rose, Nine/Rose, Ten/Rose, or Ten II/Rose etc.) + prompt. Please make sure to leave each prompt in a new comment. Prompts do not have to be winter and/or holiday-related.
  2. Read through the prompts until you find one that inspires you. Write a ficlet! You can either post your fic as a comment reply (if it fits) to the prompt or reply to the prompt with a link back to your journal.
  3. Fill as many prompts as you want! More than one person can fill the same prompt.
  4. All ratings are accepted (though you can specify in your prompt), but please write the rating + pairing in the comment header.
  5. Enjoy reading the fics and please remember to leave feedback!
  6. In a couple weeks time, we'll post a masterlist of everyone's fics.
  7. If ficathons aren't your thing, no pressure to write or participate! We'll still be posting our daily Doctor/Rose pics.

In order for the ficathon to run smoothly, please...
  • Fill prompts with newly written fic, rather than recs or links to fics that have already been written.
  • Reply to a prompt only if you are filling or planning to fill it (but please DO give authors feedback!).
  • Be considerate to your fellow ficathon participants -- both prompters and authors.

If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment here or PM a mod. If you want to promote the ficathon with the snazzy banner, you can use the code below:

Have fun!

A Smile Spoiler
Rated G

She’s seen him devastated; she’s seen him driven; she’s seen him euphoric with adventure. She’s seen him sad; she’s seen him content; and she thought she had seen him happy.

Until today.

She’d recognized him instantly of course, she knew what all of them looked like, even if she’d never met this one. Long and lean (as he liked to be) with dark brown hair that the wind was playing with now, but she suspected was never tamed hair. His tenth life, if her memory didn’t deceive her, and it seldom did.

He and his companion of the moment were sitting on a long trench coat spread on the lush blue grass. He had his arm around the blond girl with too much makeup (not that either of those was a unique trait among the Doctor’s assistants) who nestled into the crook of his shoulder as if she fit there perfectly.

He was speaking to the girl in low, almost whispered tones, no doubt explaining something he found fascinating about this planet That wasn’t so unusual; what was unusual was the look on his face when he looked at the girl.

It was almost too strange to think of, but her first thought was that the Doctor was in love with the blond woman, but that couldn’t be possible. The Doctor didn’t fall in love with his companions; sometimes he flirted, sometimes he took a passing fancy to some woman he met on his travels, but he didn’t fall in love.

But then the blond turned her head and kissed her Doctor lightly on the lips and when they separated a moment later he smiled.

It wasn’t a manic adventure smile. It was a pleased and fond smile. It wasn’t an amused by something only he knew smile. It was joy, and love. It was so unlike the Doctor that River briefly wondered if this was just some look alike in space and time; it happened.

She felt someone behind her and turned to see a Doctor she recognized there, the tweed and bow tie one. But he was right behind her, normally she would have heard him coming, but he must be sneaking around. He nodded to her when she turned to face him, but his eyes were on the pair farther into the clearing.

He schooled his expression, but he couldn’t mask the look in his eyes. Those showed emotions she was more used to seeing from him. Longing, grief, sorrow. But there was something else there too, like the dimmed reflection of the look the other Doctor wore.

“That’s you isn’t it?” she asked.

He nodded, his jaw clenched but he didn’t say anything. That wasn’t like his either, in all the time and all the ways she had known him, talking was a common feature.

“Did you love her?” she asked, for once uncertain about asking him something.

He didn’t say anything, but he didn’t have to. His eyes were still focused on the pair, though come to think of it, it might just be on the blond. All the answer to the question she got was a flash in his eyes. She couldn’t be sure what it was, but that it was there was enough. He had, and what’s more he still did.

“Do I ever get to meet her?”

Through the cloud of longing the Doctor smiled, but this was only his amused-at-his-own-wit smile. But he still sounded sad as he answered, “Spoilers.”

World Without You -- PG, Eleven/Rose, Amy/Rory
Note: YEAH so this isn't exactly what you asked for... but... I do what I want. Also, I had such a hard time titling this without making a lame Inception joke.

Amy storms out of the cottage in Upper Leadworth with desperate conviction and the Doctor follows after her, a ringing in his ears and a lead weight of guilt in his stomach. If this isn’t the dream, he’s just got her fiance--husband?--killed. He’s fairly certain that makes him the worst imaginary friend to ever be, well, not so imaginary.

Thing is, she’s not even the first. Donna, then Sarah Jane -- really, he suspects it’s best for everyone that he wasn’t at the Smith-Jones wedding. Still, this is different, and possibly even worse. Rory wasn’t liaising with a giant spider or a faceless thing in a cloak. Rory was a good man who loved Amy Pond and now he was a pile of dust in the nursery.

Unless this is the dream, that is. If this is the dream, there’s still a chance, and that’s more than he could give Lance or Sarah’s husband. Amy’s convinced, based on nothing but heartbreak and hope. He knows she’s only so certain because it’s inconceivable to her that a world could exist without Rory Williams.

And he remembers feeling that way about someone, once upon a time. He also remembers fire and screaming and a brilliant ginger woman pulling him back from the edge. Maybe he should do that for Amy. She’s angry and she’s hurting and he gets that, he does, but maybe they should take a moment to think. After all, she could be pregnant.

But then Amy says, “I just want him,” and the Doctor knows what she means, so he presses the keys into her hand and says, “Okay.”

If this is real, maybe he doesn’t want it either. He wonders if he would have time to regenerate, wonders whether he would want to.

“I loved Rory,” Amy says, “and I never told him. And now he’s gone.”

Yeah, the Doctor thinks. I know the feeling.

Amy starts the van.

LOL WELL. I love me my 10 minute scribbles. Forgive me for mangling your prompt?

He is afraid to ask her how it happened (happens). How she comes to find him, the spaces beside her dark and empty. How anything happens the way it happens; if cracks are still cracking and if voids still whispering.

Instead he clenches her hand and she lets him cling to her as the world disappears beneath a fall of white, snow flaking off the foggy sky to stick to their cheeks before the thump thump of their hearts melt away nostalgia's touch.

"Rose." The smile on his face is skeptical, too big for his face and too big for her to hold on to.

"I'm sorry," she confesses, the syllables slipping from her lips as wafts of smoky vapors, disappearing into the cold.

He reels her in with a fisherman's grace and tucks the crown of her head under his chin, feeling the chill of her skin bleed through his shirt, the sprawling lace of hoarfrost whistling of loss and victory and greed on the surface of his heart (good thing he has one to spare).

"I'm sorry too." For so many things, he is. For leaving her, for losing her, for finding her again even, because it means that the him of another time and another world had to part with her in order for her to be here.

"Doctor?" The call is distant, curious.

Amy and Rory return on the horizon, tired of snowball fights and snow angels, hair dark and wet, their brightly colored mittens clasped together.

"Can I stay this time?"

"Yes. Yes, of course. Always."

"Amy, can I have my scarf back now?"

"No, the snowman needs it more, Rory."

Rose smiles into his shirt, flicking a fingertip against his bow tie.

"You did good this time, Doctor."

Fondly, he closes his eyes and hums. Yes, he rather thinks he did.

And Baby makes 3 (1/2)
Note: Not entirely sure that this is what you're looking for, but I couldn't resist. Also, first DW fic. Um, Yeah? Sorry for any mistakes!

And Baby Makes Three

It looked suspiciously alien in nature. He wasn’t sure what species-X’ah, perhaps, or maybe a Paluma; whatever it was, it did not look human. He stared at it hard and long, pulled on the glasses he really didn’t need but Rose insisted he have, and looked again at the bundle in the woman’s arms.

Nope. Still didn’t look remotely human.

He was aware that everyone was watching him eagerly, the bundle included, waiting for him to say something sentimental and sappy and heart melting as he looked at the face of his first-born son.

So instead, he said, “Is it supposed to be this red and wrinkly?”

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Jackie roll her eyes and Pete shoot him a pitying look. From the bed, Rose, rather red and sticky herself, glared at him. The nurse, for her part, didn’t seem fazed. Instead, she smiled brightly and said, “He’s just been born, Doctor Smith. Give ‘im an hour and he’ll be the cutest thing you’ve ever seen. Here, Dad, hold him and you’ll change your mind.”

And with that, the child was thrust into his arms. It looked up at him, he looked down at it, and then it started to squall.

Which, to be fair, would have been his reaction if suddenly taken out of a nice, warm, safe place and placed into the arms of a man who really hadn’t the faintest idea of what to do. He looked up helplessly at Rose, but she was still under the influence of the drugs she’d been given upon going into labor, and besides, he was positive that after being in labor for nine hours, the last thing she wanted to do was deal with a hopeless Time-lord-human hybrid and a screaming child.

“Try talking to him,” the nurse urged. “He wants to hear his daddy’s voice.”

The Doctor, though not fluent in baby speak (even with the TARDIS and as a Time Lord, it had always remained a mystery to him, probably not helped by his tendency to stay as far away from infants as possible), was fairly certain that this was not what the child was saying. Still, since no one appeared to be jumping up to stop the crying, he gave it a try.

“Um, hello?” he said. “I’m the Doctor.” Nothing. “Welcome to the world?” he tried. Still nothing. “I’m your Dad?”

The baby cried even louder, if possible. “We’re happy to see you,” he said this time. It was mostly true-he was excited about being a father and watching Rose be a mother. He simply hadn’t expected things to be quite so messy, or the baby to be quite so… bald. And messy. And loud. Apparently, the child knew that at this particular moment, his statement hadn’t been entirely accurate, because its cries reached a decibel level the Doctor had previously thought impossible for a human to reach.

He was reassessing his initial prognosis. If anything, this child was definitely a Chribi- there was no other explanation for how this level of noise could come from something that small.

Oh, he’d heard about the process of birth and been warned about the screams, of course. He’d even assisted in a few births before, both human and alien. He knew the basics, knew that birth was a messy and unpleasant process and that babies liked to cry. Still, this was him and Rose, the couple the Universes couldn’t keep apart. He might have had only one heart, but he was still part Time Lord, the most advanced race to have ever existed. And she was Rose. And really, there had been no reason to suspect that any child of theirs would be anything other than extraordinary. And he was, really. It was just…

The baby was so normal. And it was brilliant, it really was. But he was loud, sticky, and quite frankly, very, very ugly. Just like every newborn baby. Although, come to think of it, it really wasn’t surprising that any child of his was loud. He’d always had a gob, this body.

Oh, She Knows Pt. 1/2 (Ten/Rose, PG)
A/N: I realized, reading this prompt, that I had begun a very similar story ages ago and never finished it, so I decided to finish it. My apologies for any glaring errors or parts that simply suck--I knew if I went through it as many times as I'd like to, I'd lose the guts to actually post it. Hope you enjoy!

“What do I know?”

He looked up from the console. “Loads of things.”

She grinned at the smudge of grease on his forehead. The TARDIS wasn’t badly damaged from their adventure on Krop Tor, but she needed some rest. From what Rose could tell, the Doctor wasn’t really helping anything with his tinkering, but listening to him babble while he worked was entertaining. They’d already debated favorite ice cream flavors and the merits of the colorful lampposts they’d seen on the planet Flardt.

“Yeah,” she agreed, “but what did you mean? In the pit? Ida said to ask you.”

He paused in his adjustment of his hair, which really only succeeded in getting the aforementioned oil involved. “What did she say, exactly?”

“That you started to say, ‘Tell her,’ and then said, ‘Oh, she knows.’” She smiled. “I think you should tell me what exactly I’m supposed to know.”

He set the sonic screwdriver on the console and studied her carefully. “I can’t.”

Her smile slipped a little. “Why not?”

He took a long breath, staring at the ceiling and rocking back on his heels. After a moment, she fidgeted uncomfortably. “Doctor? If you—I mean, you don’t—“

“I keep meaning to say it,” he interrupted her finally. “I haven’t said it before because I don’t know how. All the words that are meant for this sort of thing, that were made to express it, that one is supposed to say in this sort of situation—they just…they don’t begin to describe it.”

She hopped off the jump seat and stood, crossing her arms. “Describe what?”

“Well, it’s hard to quantify, really,” he said, tilting his head and staring at something far away. “I suppose it’s…what you mean to me.”

She smiled then and went to hug him. He looked a bit surprised, but still solemn. She poked him playfully in the chest and stared up at him. “Well, of course I know that. I’m your best mate.”

“No, that’s not it. You’re…you’re Rose.”

She was suddenly acutely aware that he could probably feel her heart trying to hammer its way out of her chest, the way she was pressed to him. It was a frequent and inconvenient result of their shared lack of regard for the concept of personal space. She leaned slightly away and looked up again to gauge his expression. It was the familiar, guarded look that he always put on when things got particularly dire or particularly emotional. Brows drawn together just enough to crease his forehead. Eyes the slightest bit unfocused in the shadow of his thoughts. Echoes of his past self in the set of his shoulders.

“Yeah, I’d figured that part out, thanks,” she half-laughed, half-whispered. The Doctor wasn’t finished.

“You’re my best mate, yes, but you’re so much more than that, Rose. I look at the stars, and all I can see is the way you light up when we visit them. I regenerated, changed into a different man before your eyes, and you stayed. You stayed and I’m so glad, Rose, because this me thinks you’re brilliant.”

He spilled it all out in one breath and finally stopped to take another. Rose stood still. And then the Doctor added, almost as an afterthought, “So I suppose the thing I meant to say in the pit is that I--“

He was cut off by Rose’s sudden, uncontrollable urge to kiss him.
